A gang at Ambur in Tirunelveli district murdered a Sub-Inspector (SI), attached to Alwarkurichi police station, on Thursday.

Police sources said Vetrivel (44) the SI was returning to Alwarkurichi police station on a two-wheeler from Ambasamudram taluk office and was crossing the Gadana river bridge, when the gang hurled country-made bombs on him and attacked him with weapons.
At that time the convoy of Ministers M R K Paneerselvam and T P M Mohideen Khan, who were heading towards Kadayanallur for inspecting the area, reached the place. Seeing the convoy, the gang fled and security personnel who were in the convoy fired at the gang. The injured Vetrivel was rushed to the Ambasamudram Government Hospital in a VIP patrol vehicle.
A senior doctor, who was in the convoy accompanied Vetrivel. After being given first aid at Ambasamudram Government Hospital, he was rushed to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Medical sources said Vetrivel suffered grievous cut injuries on the left side of his neck. His right leg was grievously injured, when the country- made bombs burst. On information, Tirunelveli Range DIG P Kannappan and Superintendent of Police Asra Garg visited the spot and conducted enquiry.
Police sources said Vetrivel was a native of Uppathoor in Virudhunagar district.
He joined the force in 1988 and was promoted as SI in 2005 and was part of the forest brigand Veerappan operation.
A case of mistaken identity
Vetrivel’s murder was a case of mistaken identity, Kannappan said. He said that the wife of the Kadayam Sub Inspector Sivasubramanian had lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against the SI. It was said that Kadyam SI’s in-laws had planned to murder the SI.
As Kadayam SI and Vetrivel were of the same height and build and since Vetrivel was wearing a helmet, he might have been murdered in a case of mistaken identity.
Investigations are on, the DIG added. The police found 2 two-wheelers parked some distance from the murder spot, and vehicle documents in the name of SI Sivasubramanian’s relatives were recovered from one of the twowheelers.
This led the police to believe that the murdered SI was mistaken for Sivasubramanian,
Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai are witnessing many chikungunya and viral fever cases

Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai are witnessing many chikungunya and viral fever cases. Every house at Melapalayam has a patient suffering from any one of these fever.
As the overflowing drainage channels, roadside sewage ponds, garbage dunes, uncovered overhead water tanks etc. are providing highly potential breeding ground for the mosquito, the spread of vector-borne diseases in this most backward region of Tirunelveli Corporation has assumed serious proportion after the northeast monsoon started. The spread of jaundice, a water-borne disease, has made the situation still worse.
All hospitals – both private and government hospitals – in and around Melapalayam are overflowing with hundreds of patients suffering from the chikungunya and viral fever for the past one month.
Though it is very much obvious that these types of fever is spreading fast at Melapalayam due to the seriously increased density of mosquito, no concrete measure has been taken so far to destroy the breeding grounds.
“Though we are repeatedly appealing to the corporation officials to start the anti-mosquito and larvicidal activities immediately, the official machinery is yet to act. A health camp was organised recently even as the entire Melapalayam, housing mostly below poverty line families, is badly craving for a comprehensive strategy to completely eradicate mosquito,” said ‘National’ S.M. Shahul, district treasurer of Tamil Nadu Thouheedh Jamaath.
The party recently organised a rally and a demonstration at Melapalayam to highlight the pathetic living conditions of the residents there and demand the civic body to take immediate steps to ensure better living conditions for them.
“Though the conservancy workforce now we have is not enough to deal with the situation prevailing at Melapalayam, we’re doing our level best to improve the sanitary conditions there,

At the age of 80, a retired Tamil teacher of Tirunelveli, has translated the Old Testament of the Holy Bible from its root language Hebrew to Tamil.
S Jayaraj (80), a graduate of Mathematics and a post-graduate in Tamil, is currently working as a Tamil teacher at the Sankar Higher Secondary School in Sankarnagar.
After retirement he started learning Hebrew under the guidance of Robinson, the then Tirumangalam CSI pastorate chairman, from 2003 to 2005. In 2005, Robinson died and before his death, Robinson asked Jayaraj to translate at least the first five chapters of the Old Testament.
Subsequently, Jayaraj got involved in the translation and in 2008 published the first five chapters Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Then he did the translation of next five chapters Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Songs of Solomon.
Last month when he was involved in the translation, he suffered a stroke. Discharged from hospital on the eve of Christmas, Express caught up with Jayaraj.
He said when he was studying Cardwell’s book “Comparative grammar of Dravidian languages” he learnt that Tamil and Hebrew were related. This struck a cord with him. So he started learning Hebrew. But in India the basic books of the language were not available. After lot of efforts Jayaraj bought the Hebrew books from Israel at a cost of Rs 50,000 in 2000.
According to Jayaraj many translations are being done from English to Tamil but the original meaning can be brought out only when the translation is done from the root language.
According to Tamil scholar Tho Paramasivam, to his knowledge Jayaraj was the only person translating the Old Testament of the Bible from Hebrew to Tamil and he should be recognised for it
