Further voicing concern over huge post-harvest food wastage worth Rs 50,000 crore in the country, the minister suggested various state governments to join hands with the Centre in its efforts for promoting the sector.

The value of wastage had come down now by Rs 8,000 crore after the food processing industries (FPI) achieved a 10 per cent growth against six per cent in 2004, but much more is needed to be done in the sector to completely avoid wastage.

Sahai, “Though India was the largest producer of milk and second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, a large quantity of the perishable commodities was wasted, (due to lack of cold storage facilities).”

Besides, he also inaugurated a building of the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT).

TN Govt will buy 2,000 (Mw) of power from various sources

The Tamil Nadu government will buy 2,000 mega watt (Mw) of power from various sources to meet the increasing demand till May 2010. The demand for power in the state is likely to increase by nearly eight per cent this year, particularly during peak summer.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by chief minister M Karunanidhi to review the power situation.
TNEB
“Tamil Nadu will receive 1,607 Mw as its share from the central pool from June 2010. Till that time it has been decided to buy power from other sources,” according to an official release. The chief minister also asked the officials from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and others to speed up the new projects, which are coming up in the state.

Major projects include Unit-1 and Unit-2 of the 1,200 Mw project in North Chennai, which are expected to be commissioned by May 2011 and November 2011 respectively.

The state will also receive 1,607 MW from Kundakulam, Kalpakkam, Neyveli and Simhadri between June 2010 and May 2011, the release said.

According to a TNEB estimate, demand touched an all-time high of 9,000 Mw last summer and is expected to reach 10,000 Mw this year — 2,000 Mw more than its generation capacity of 8,200 Mw.

“Earlier, the power exchange rate was Rs 8 per unit. Now it has declined to Rs 4.50. So, we can purchase power at a lower rate,” a senior TNEB official said.

Congress leaders and Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy voiced opposition against the release of S. Nalini and others convicted

Even as the five-member Prison Advisory Board formed by the Tamil Nadu government is preparing its report on the premature release of 11 life convicts, Congress leaders and Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy have voiced opposition against the release of S. Nalini and others convicted for the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The state government had constituted the board headed by Vellore District Collector C. Rajendran to consider the plea of life convicts for premature release as they had spent more than 14 years in prison. Denying the speculation that the board has decided to recommend the release of Nalini, Rajendran said it is for the state government to decide on the release and the board would submit its report soon.

Voicing his opposition to the release of Nalini, former Congress union minister E.V.K.S.Elangovan said the state government should remember she was from a banned terrorist organisation involved in the killing of the country’s former prime minister and others.

According to state Congress chief K.V.Thankabalu the law of the land should take its course. He reminded that the party had lost its great leader in the attack on May 21, 1991.

Janata Party president Swamy said the release cannot be easy as it has to pass through several steps. “I will fight against the release at every step,” he remarked. He said he would file a petition seeking revocation of the advisory board.

Nalini was awarded the death penalty in 1991 but later at the intervention of Congress chief and Rajiv Gandhi’s widow Sonia Gandhi, the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Last September she had filed a petition in the Madras High Court asking for the Tamil Nadu government to convene the advisory board to consider her case for release from jail.

In her petition, Nalini had said that she was entitled for release in 2005 itself as she had completed 14 years in jail. Later she started her fasting protest. In 2007, the state government had rejected her application for release and she had then filed a case in the Madras High Court in 2008.

The court directed the state government to reconsider her request for release by a validly constituted advisory board. As the government has not constituted the advisory board yet Nalini asked the court to form a board and to submit a report to the state.

Nalini’s husband and co-convict Murugan is also serving his sentence in the same prison.

Last March Priyanka Vadra, daughter of Rajiv Gandhi, had visited Nalini and the latter cited the meeting in her demand for release.

It will be interesting to see how the state government would react to the board’s recommendations as it can agree or disagree with it.

In Sri Lanka the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been decimated and its leader V.Prabhakarn killed by the island army.

Urge to implement national poly on urban street vendors

District Coordinator of National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) Tamizhagan today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to implement the national policy on urban street vendors in the state immediately.

In a press release here, Mr Tamizhagan said the government should ensure that the vendors were issued identity cards, licences for their shops, allotted sites for their shops and extended bank credit.

He said vending committees, comprising representatives of street vendors, urban local bodies, police and residents welfare associations, should be formed to monitor the implementation of the policy.

Whenever major schemes like Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission, road development/four-lane and other development projects were implemented, care should be taken that street vendors were not affected, he said.

The State Government should form a welfare board for petty shopkeepers and street-side vendors,
