The much awaited broad gauge conversion works in 122-km long Mayiladuthurai-Villupuram section have been completed and the railway authorities opened the route for freight traffic today.

The first goods train through the route commenced its journey to Guwahati in Assam from Kumakonam carrying 2500 tonnes of sugar.
On December 16, 2009 Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), Tiruchirapalli conducted an inspection run in the route prior to opening it for freight traffic.
A goods train with 41 wagons carrying 2500 tonnes of sugar commenced its journey from Kumbakonam at 6:30 hrs on Tuesday.
It reached Mayiladuthurai at 7:30 running at 60 kmph. The train covered the Mayiladuthurai-Chidambaram route at low speed, said railway sources.
The Southern Railway commenced the BG conversion work in this section on December 1, 2006.Initially, it had been announced that works would be completed by 2007 end. However, the project ran into inordinate delay. Construction of the 2100 ft long Kollidam bridge between Chidambaram and Mayiladuthurai was the biggest challenge as the soil was having hard rocks at a depth of 10 m.
The Railways came under severe public criticism for delaying the work.Subsequently rail track laying and strengthening works, including laying of gravel was completed during December,2009.However,subsidiary works like platform construction, railway station modernisation and other works are still going on.
Once the works are completed, Commissioner for Railway Safety will conduct speed trials before opening the route for passenger traffic.Regular passenger traffic is not likely to start in this route before April, railway sources said. – Agencies
