State to give Rs. 99 crore in Nagercoil

NAGERCOIL:

As per the directive from Reserve Bank of India and as part of the ‘financial inclusion’ of the disadvantaged and the low income groups, the Indian Overseas Bank, the lead bank of the district, has established Financial Literacy and Credit Counselling Centre (FLCCC) at Vettoornimadam near here.

The objective is to provide free financial literacy and credit counselling services through a face-to-face interaction as well as other available media such as e-mail, fax, mobile phone etc., as per the convenience of the interested persons.

The financial counselling includes education on responsible borrowing, proactive and early savings and also counselling for individuals, who are indebted to formal or informal financial institutions.

It will educate the people in rural and urban areas with regard to financial products and services available from the formal financial institutions and their advantages. The FLCCC will formulate debt restructuring plans for borrowers in distress and recommend the same to formal financial institutions, including banks in the cooperative sector, for their consideration to solve the crisis.

Christened ‘Sneha’, IOB’s FLCCC at Vettoornimadam was inaugurated by K.R. Ananda, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India, Chennai on Monday in the presence of District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, who lighted the traditional lamp.

At a time when the RBI is popularising the concept of ‘financial inclusion’ and bringing all segments of the population into the ambit of banking, the FLCCC is likely to play a constructive and effective role in creating an awareness among the public of all sorts of banking operations pertaining to a depositor or a borrower and extending a helping hand to them in case of any crisis or doubts.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ananda said the FLCCC, by involving well-trained volunteers and members of self-help groups, should create an awareness among the public, particularly among the rural masses, of products available with the financial institutions for the betterment of the deprived.

“Since 38 per cent of the Indian population is still depending on the moneylenders for their urgent and unexpected financial needs, we should concentrate more on bringing them under the banking net. Hence, all districts in Tamil Nadu will house a FLCCC before March 2010 end”, Mr. Ananda said.

Appealing to the bankers to exceed the credit targets, Mr. Rajendra Ratnoo said the State Government had planned to give Rs. 99 crore towards loan to the members of religious minorities and hence the banks had a role to play in this connection.

General Manager, IOB, S.N. Misra, Senior Regional Manager, IOB, Kanyakumari, N. Swaminathan, Senior Regional Manager, IOB, Tirunelveli, M. Ramadoss and top executives of various banks in the district participated.
