SHG members during the interaction meeting organised the platinum jubilee year celebrations
K.R. Anandha, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India, in Madurai district to take part in a sensitisation programme for SHGs.

Meetings organised by banks usually tend to be placid affairs with speakers resorting to an array of financial and technical terminology that are beyond the comprehension of the laymen. However, the meeting organised at Chekkanoorani in Madurai district on Monday took most of the 300-odd self-help group members in the audience by surprise.
K.R. Anandha, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), along with a host of top RBI officers and officials from different banks gave centre stage to SHG members during the interaction meeting organised as part of the platinum jubilee year celebrations. After an inaugural function, they took questions from the members and answered all of them patiently.
A trickle at first, the questions flow soon turned into a torrent. One SHG member wanted to know why all banks did not have the same interest rates. Mr. Anandha told the lady that different banks had different systems of assets and liabilities and that RBI no longer micro-managed interest rates.
“We are more concerned about ensuring the timely flow of credit to consumer and hence the banks have a free hand in determining interest rates. Only with regard to agriculture loans at public sector banks, a rate of 7 per cent has been fixed,” he informed her.
When a SHG member queried why the groups of ‘Mahalir Thittam’ (Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women) were given preference while giving economic assistance, bank officials said that it was a policy decision of the State Government over which they had no say and were duty bound to follow. However, RBI officials assured the lady that this question had cropped up in many places and it would be brought to the notice of the Government.
Many SHG members thanked the Canara Bank for having established a separate branch for micro finance as it had resulted in their loan applications getting expedited. Also, sanctions to 418 loans to the tune of Rs. 5.22 crore were given on this occasion with the RBI Regional Director giving away the letters.
S. Selvaraj and N. Ramasubramanian, Assistant General Managers, RBI, Chandini Mool Chandani, Deputy General Manager, RBI, K.P. Pai, Assistant General Manager, Canara Bank and KN. Subramanian, Lead District Manager, were present.

The Coimbatore Corporation Council on Monday resolved to explore the possibility of improving arterial roads such as Avanashi Road, Tiruchi Road, Mettupalayam Road and Sathyamangalam Road to mark the World Classical Tamil Conference in June 2010.
A resolution to this effect was discussed at the meeting presided by Mayor R. Venkatachalam along with Deputy Mayor N. Karthik and Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra.
It was decided to seek the expression of interest from private players under the Public-Private Partnership basis to avoid financial burden on the civic body.
Water supply
The Council decided to request the State Government to give Rs. 7 crore to replace the existing 6.90-km length of Pilloor water supply mainline that supplies water to the North and East Zones of the Corporation. The Council also approved a resolution for taking up additional works such as roofing, new place for cutting and cleaning the fish, parking places, flooring, electrical works, drinking water facilities and stair case construction at the modern fish market at Ukkadam at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh.
The Corporation passed four resolutions for procurement of baskets for degradable and bio-non degradable wastes for segregation at source for four zones as part of the Solid Waste Management programme at Rs. 1.49 crore. It also resolved to take up renovation works of the flower market at Rs. 98.43 lakh.

The Council also noted that works were being taken up as part of the ongoing works by the National Highways for widening Tiruchi Road into four lane from bypass road to Stock Exchange. The work involved realignment of the centre median.
The Council took up a resolution for renovating the drainage and replace the broken concrete slabs to make pavement available for pedestrians on Oppanakkara Street at Rs. 75 lakh.
It also discussed a resolution for fixing an acceptable nominal rent and to lease the proposed world class swimming pool to be constructed at Rs. 175 lakh on Dr.Nanjappa Road by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.
It was decided to fix a reasonable rent and to lease the space in VOC Park to the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation for 20 years to run an aquarium.

Members of the District Panchayat and its president Sangeetha Vasanthakumar, discussing a point during the panchayat meeting in Tiruchi

District Panchayat council ward members, owing allegiance to the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a walk-out in protest against what they called ‘failure of the District Panchayat’ in fulfilling the needs of the people.
Transparency
They raised slogans demanding transparency in the administration and the allocation of funds to the District Panchayat wards.
The trouble started when a group of members – R. Raja (CPI-M), A. Kangaraj (DMDK) and Cheran (MDMK) submitted a petition to the District Panchayat president Sankeetha Vasanthakumar, demanding, among other things, release of a ‘white paper’ on the ward-wise selection of works and respective allocation of funds.
They insisted on adopting a resolution in support of their demands.
The president, in her reply, politely denied that none of the demands could be adopted as resolution as the petition was not submitted in advance.
Development of GH
Expressing concern over laying of road at Punganur tank, another member, Nedumaran (AIADMK) wanted a resolution to be adopted for the development of the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in the city. Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) objected to a few remarks by the opposition, triggering heated exchanges for quite some time.
Meanwhile, the opposition members, including four women, staged a walk-out protesting against the ‘negligence’ of petitions on people’s grievances being submitted by them to the District Panchayat.
Later, Ms. Sankeetha Vasanthakumar clarified that the State government’s guidelines on conducting the proceedings were being adhered to.
Due priority was attached to members’ grievances and also for its early redress,
