More than 100 volunteers of the ruling DMK, its ally Congress and the opposition BJP and MDMK parties were arrested when they took out a rally demanding that all trains running between Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Kanniakumari must stop at Kuzhithurai railway station.

The volunteers led by Town Panchayat head Pon Asaithambi and former MLA Kumaradas, also wanted to hold a protest demonstration on the railway track. However, police prevented them from staging the demo.
They took out the rally from Marthandam bus stand to Kuzhithurai railway station.
Seven trains pass through Thiruvanthapuram-Nagarcoil-Kanyakumari route everyday. But only three trains stop at Kuzhithurai, they pointed out to highlight their demand.
Vaiko today said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is treating the party as his family property.
Jan 4 : Marumalarchi DMK(MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko today said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is treating the party as his family property.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Vaiko said during the tenure of DMK founder and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, late C N Annadurai, even the poor and downtrodden people were encouraged to become legislators, unlike the tenure of Mr Karunanidhi.
Mr Vaiko said it is a shame that all the important posts in the party were given to the family members of Mr Karunanidhi only.
The MDMK supremo said though a resolution had been passed in the Assembly against the gruesome murder of Tamils in Sri Lanka and condemned by the entire state, the Centre failed to take steps to stop the atrocities against Tamils by the Lankan Government.
He alleged that rampant corruption is prevailing in the state. The money allocated for planning and development of the state had been misused by the ruling party to garner votes during the elections, he added.
Mr Vaiko said media resorted to agitation all over the state when three employees of a Tamil daily were brutally murdered at Madurai sometime ago. A renowned English daily here has accused in its editorial that the present Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister M K Azhagiri, was responsible for the untoward incident.
The MDMK founder regretted that the law-enforcement agencies in the state, which voiced its condemnation earlier against the dastardly attack on the newspaper employees had turned volta-facie, as the verdict in a court case went against the journalists championing for the cause of the deceased.
He said alarming price rice of essential commodities has caused considerable inconvenience to the common people.
Vaiko condemns Lankan President Rajapaksa preferential treatment at Tirupati temple
Posted by ganesh in Communication, Information, Other, Politics, Temples, programme on January 2nd, 2010
The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) founder, V Gopalswamy (Vaiko), condemned the Union Government for inviting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and giving a preferential treatment to him at the famous Tirupati temple.

Addressing the media here, Vaiko contended that the Union Government by keeping in view the state of Lankan Tamils should not have extended such a privilege to Rajapaksa.
“He (Rajapaksa) was invited by the Indian government and he was brought to Tirupati Tirumala temple. I don’t blame the temple authorities. They don’t have any fault in this,” Vaiko said.
“I accuse the Central Government for inviting Rajapaksa here and giving a red carpet welcome in front of temple and taking him to the Sanctum Sanctorum which… unpardonable, betrayal against the Tamils,”he added.
In October 2009, Rajapaksa visited to Tirupathi for a darshan of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala.
He was given red carpet reception in New Delhi and was also given special permission to enter the Balaji temple.
World Classical Tamil Conference to help Tamil language across the globe

The World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in Coimbatore next year will come out with concrete measures on spreading the Tamil language across the globe, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters here after chairing a consultative meeting on the modalities of holding the Tamil conference, he said: “This is not going to be a conference where people will congregate, discuss and disperse. There will be concrete action plans for popularising the language post-conference.”
The World Classical Tamil Conference will be held in Coimbatore June 23-27, 2010.
He urged political parties to set aside their political differences and participate in the language conference.
“We have invited all the political parties. The AIADMK, MDMK and DMDK have expressed their inability to participate in the conference. It is upto them to decide whether to participate or not, given the event’s importance,” he said.
He said President Pratibha Patil has been invited for the conference.
To a query on how the conference would be different and better than the earlier ones, the chief minister said: “I don’t want to degrade the earlier conferences. As a follower of Anna (former chief minister and DMK founder C.N. Annadurai), my focus will be on making the proposed conference similar to the one organised by him (Anna) in 1968.”
He said the conference will result in improving the infrastructure facilities of villages surrounding Coimbatore.
Minority, majority & Madras city

‘The rich get richer and the poor get poorer’. This famous dialogue from a Rajnikanth film became true in 2009 as far as Tamilnadu politics is concerned, as the ruling DMK – Congress combine continued its winning streak in all elections, while almost all other opposition parties ended the year with a poor performance.
A look at last year’s happenings in the State’s political arena may tell you more.
SON-SHINE
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s Chennai-based son M K Stalin elevated to a newly created post of Deputy Chief Minister. The move was construed by many as Stalin, long touted as Karunanidhi’s heir apparent, being readied for the Chief Minister’s post, even as his father hinted at a possible retirement next year after completing ’some duties’.
BLOCKBUSTERS
Congress-DMK combine romped home victorious in May general elections, grabbing 27 of total 39 seats in the State, making it a hat-trick of wins after its success in 2004 Lok Sabha polls and 2006 Assembly elections. The results surprised many as DMK managed to win despite
Sri Lankan Tamils issue and anti-incumbency factor.
FLOP SHOW
Contrary to pre-poll predictions, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa could not halt the DMK’s winning spree, despite forging a big alliance with the PMK and the Left parties besides support from her long time partner the MDMK. AIADMK, which in the past strongly opposed the LTTE, highlighted the Tamils issue during electoral campaigns.
OPERATION FAILURE
Dr Ramadoss’s PMK turned out to be the biggest loser in the Lok Sabha polls, drawing a blank after aligning with the AIADMK. Later PMK also snapped its ties with the J Jayalalithaa – led party. If sources are to be believed, the doctor-turned-politician is now planning to go back to the DMK fold. There are also others who say that he may work on a third front.
CAPTAINSHIP
The fledgling DMDK floated by actor Vijaykant continued to play spoilsport for AIADMK and even managed to come second in certain constituencies in the Lok Sabha polls. However, the recently concluded bypolls for Tiruchendur and Vandavasi came as a shock to the actor-politician, as his candidates lost deposits in both constituencies.
STATUE STATES
Tamilnadu was also in news for ’statue diplomacy’ with neighbour Karnataka amid the Hogenakkal and decades-old Cauvery water disputes between them. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi opened a statue of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in Bangalore, while his Karnataka counterpart B S Yeddyurappa unveiled Kannada poet Sarvagna’s statue in Chennai.
SUPER ‘FAST’
Karunanidhi, the octogenarian DMK patriarch, began an ‘indefinite hunger strike’ to protest ‘cruel acts’ against Tamils in Sri Lanka, prompting a concerned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to phone him to assure that India was trying to influence Colombo to end its hostilities. As a result, the ‘indefinite fast’ ended in just hours.
Portfolio Potpourri
Confusion prevailed in the DMK after the Lok Sabha elections on portfolio allocation among top leaders — Karunanidhi’s son M K Alagiri, grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja — though Congress reportedly refused to give plum portfolios like Telecoms, Surface Transport, Shipping and Highways. Senior leader and former Shipping Minister T R Baalu had to make way for his junior party colleagues and was made DMK’s Parliamentary leader in both Houses of Parliament.
B(U)YPOLLS
Karunanidhi-led DMK also had the last laugh in bypolls to State Assembly held during 2009. The ‘minority government’ emerged triumphant among other political parties, thanks to a string of victories in bypolls giving the ruling party a stranglehold over politics in Tamilnadu. With 99 MLAs in the Assembly now, the DMK is now marching towards the magic figure of 100, as the Pennagaram bypoll is fast approaching.
CITY LIGHTS
Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin, who had been to Singapore to consult experts on cleaning up Cooum, launched the first phase of the Rs 1200 crore restoration project in December. ‘Once the restoration of Cooum is done, a decision regarding cleaning and restoring of Adyar River and Buckingham Canal would be taken,’ he said. Earlier in the year, a metro rail project for the city was also kickstarted.
CPI(M) opposes MDMK’s stir of blocking goods to Kerala
Posted by ganesh in Chennai, Communication, Departments, Other, Water, dam reports, programme on December 29th, 2009
The Tamil Nadu unit of CPI(M) today opposed any move to ban movement of goods to Kerala and agitations on the Mullperiyar issue.
In a statement here, CPI(M) state unit secretary N Varadarajan referring to MDMK’s agitation, calling for ban on movement of goods to Kerala from Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar issue, the state executive of the CPI(M) said this kind of agitations would only affect the cordial relations between the people of the two states.
The state executive, which discussed the issue, felt that ban on movement of goods and agitations would not help to solve the Mullaperiyar issue, he said.
On the other hand, they would only lead to hatred and confrontation between the two states, he said and called upon the people not to support such agitations.
He said the state government which had moved the Supreme Court after the Kerala government failed to implement the apex court’s order to raise the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 ft, should expidite the case.
The Tamil Nadu government, after obtaining an order, should take all steps to implement the same. While ascertaining our rights on inter-state water disputes, it was equally important to maintain inter-state relations,
Vaiko alleged the Kerala Government had been using explosives for building a new dam
Posted by ganesh in Communication, Madurai, Politics, programme on December 19th, 2009
Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko alleged the Kerala Government had been using explosives for building a new dam near the Mullai Periyar Dam that might weaken the dam structure.
Addressing his second-leg of campaign tour at Vadipatti to create awareness among the people on the dam row near here last night Mr Vaiko, spearheading a drive to block movement of essential commodities from Tamil Nadu to Kerala to protest Kerala Government’s stand on the controversial dam urged the Centre to immediately intervene and stop Kerala from using explosives to build the new dam, about 100 metres from the old structure.
He claimed the Kerala Government’s move to build new Dam and its adamant attitude on water level in the dam would result in scarcity of drinking water to over 65 lakh people in South Tamil Nadu besides affecting the farming community depending on the dam water for irrigation.
Mr Vaiko urged the people to join him in the proposed agitation by his party to block movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities to Kerala on December 29.
