Chennai Govt General hospital to be shifted to world class complex
The 175 year-old Madras Medical College, now functioning in the Government General Hospital complex here, would be shifted a new, ‘world class’ eight storeyed complex, to be built near the hospital on a ten acre site where the central prison once stood.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who had allocated the ten acre site for the expansion of General Hospital, after the central prison was shifted to suburban Puzhal, changed his decision and decided to build the Medical College in that site.
The new eight-storeyed building with a space of 41,934 sq.m.
would be built at a cost of Rs 70 crore and tenders would be invited to select the builder by third week of next month, an official press release here said.
The Chief Minister has decided to shift the Medical College to a new multi-storeyed building, taking into consideration the fact that the existing buildings in the college were more than 100 years old and the problems faced by general public and patients, who visited the hospital, the release said.
It said the first four floors of the proposed new building would be alloted to all Medical courses. The fifth floor would have lecture halls for Medical and Para-Medical courses, while the sixth floor would be alloted for para-medical courses, the release said.
The seventh floor would be for nursing courses and the eight floor will have examination hall for all students, it said.
After the Medical college is shifted to the new building, the space would be utilised for expanding the General Hospital, it said.
When expanded, space would be provided to maintain archives and rare photos, the release said.
The 2,722 bed General Hospital, located on a 30 acre site, opposite the Central Railway station, is also 175 year-old and visited by about 12,000 patients a day. The attached Madras Medical College had 2,000 students.
The Madras Medical College was established on February 2, 1835 and is the oldest in India, along with the Medical College in Kolkata.
Jayalalithaa today accused CM of blaming LTTE Prabakaran for the present plight of Lankan Tamils
Opposition AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today accused Chief Minister M Karunanidhi of blaming LTTE Supremo V Prabakaran for the present plight of Lankan Tamils to cover up his own ‘misdeeds’ in the issue.
Reacting to Mr Karunanidhi’s remarks that the wrong strategies of Prabakaran led to the fall of LTTE and the present tragic state of Tamils in Lanka, Ms Jayalalithaa, in a statement here, charged that the Chief Minister had betrayed the Tamils.
She said if Mr Karunanidhi was really interested in protecting Lankan Tamils, he should have put pressure on the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, right from the beginning of last year, when the Lankan army launched an offensive against the Tamils.
Mr Karunanidhi, whose DMK was a constituent of the UPA government, should have pulled out, demanding ceasefire in Lanka.
”If Mr Karunanidhi had withdrawn his support, there would have been ceasefire and Tamils would have been protected,” she claimed.
Having failed to do this, the Chief Minister had betrayed the Lankan Tamils and was now trying to blame the LTTE leader in a bid to cover up his ”misdeeds” on the issue.

Mayor M.Subramanian inspecting the Jones Road subway in Saidapet

Work on the flyover at the Turnbulls Road-Cenotaph Road junction, high-level bridge on Alandur Road, Saidapet, and a vehicular subway on Jones Road, Saidapet, is nearing completion.
They will soon be inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Mayor M. Subramanian told reporters after visiting the two upcoming facilities in Saidapet on Friday.
Once the Alandur Road bridge, being constructed at a cost of Rs.9.03 crore, is opened to traffic, it will cut down the travel time for motorists between the Guindy Industrial Estate and Saidapet and help avoid a stretch of the busy Anna Salai. The new facility was proposed as the causeway there often gets submerged during heavy rain. In 2005, it was partially damaged.
The Alandur Road bridge and the Rs.8.89-crore Jones Road vehicular subway are being funded partially under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The Alandur Road bridge is 420 m long, 12 m wide and the carriageway is 7.5 m, including 2.25-m-wide footpaths on either side.
The subway on Jones Road is 305.67 m long, 5.5 m wide and has service lanes of 3.5 m each.
Other facilities, including the flyover on Kathivakkam High Road-Cochrane Basin Road and subway on Monegar Chowltry Road, would be inaugurated in March next year, the vehicular subway to replace the level-crossing 2 in Villivakkam in April and the flyover in Rangarajapuram in June next year.
