The Mullaperiyar Dam Rights Retrieval Committee, spearheaded by MDMK leader Vaiko, today said it would block all 13 roads from Tamil Nadu leading to Kerala on May 28 protesting “denial” of the state’s rights over the dam.

Vaiko and Tamizhar Desiya Iyakkam leader P Nedumaran told reporters here that the members of the committee, which also include various farmers’ outfits, would participate in the blockade in Tirunelvei, Theni, Kanyakumari and Coimbatore, the border districts.
They accused Kerala Government of taking series of steps to destroy agriculture in Tamil Nadu by denying its right over Mullaperiyar dam and creating problems on the course of Shenbagavalli, Azhiar, Neyyar and Pambaru rivres.
They also said the Supreme Court, which recently set up a five-member committee to look into all aspects of the dispute between the two states, should have asked Kerala to implement its (earlier) order allowing Tamil Nadu to raise the water level from 136 feet to 142 feet.
Tamil Nadu Government should ask the Centre to direct the Central Water Irrigation Board to takeover the maintenance of the dam, they said.
Kerala wants to build a new dam holding that the existing century-old structure was unsafe while Tamil Nadu has been opposing it.

Lawyers in Tamil Nadu will boycott court proceedings on February 19 to protest “failure” of the state government in taking action against police officers held responsible for the violence in the Madras high court premises a year ago.

The decision was taken today at a meeting of the Joint Action Committee representing various advocates associations, including Madras high court Advocates’ Association (MHAA), Tamil Nadu Advocates Association, Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Womens’ Lawyers Association.
MHAA president RC Paul Kanagaraj said in a statement that “members of the legal fraternity will abstain from all courts in Tamil Nadu on February 19 and will forma ‘human chain’. The day will be observed as ‘black’ day and advocates will wear black shirts.”
The CBI had last month filed a chargesheet against four police personnel and 32 advocates in a city court and recommended departmental action against 22 policemen in the case regarding the lawyers-police clash in the Madras high court complex on February 19 last year.
100 Volunteers of DMK,Congress,BJP and MDMK parties were arrested
More than 100 volunteers of the ruling DMK, its ally Congress and the opposition BJP and MDMK parties were arrested when they took out a rally demanding that all trains running between Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Kanniakumari must stop at Kuzhithurai railway station.

The volunteers led by Town Panchayat head Pon Asaithambi and former MLA Kumaradas, also wanted to hold a protest demonstration on the railway track. However, police prevented them from staging the demo.
They took out the rally from Marthandam bus stand to Kuzhithurai railway station.
Seven trains pass through Thiruvanthapuram-Nagarcoil-Kanyakumari route everyday. But only three trains stop at Kuzhithurai, they pointed out to highlight their demand.
Road roko to protest against ‘indirect increase’ in bus fare
Tense moments prevailed near the Government Law College near Marudhamalai on Wednesday when a section of Law College students resorted to road blockade right in front of the college blocking traffic to and from Marudhamalai.
They said that they were protesting against the introduction of semi low floor buses and imposition of indirect bus fare increase.
The agitation took a new turn when the students alleged that they were manhandled by a police officer at Vadavalli police station in the morning.
Students objected to the introduction of semi low floor buses and indirect imposition of bus fare increase on Tuesday morning. However the agitation was resolved soon.
On Wednesday, a group of students are said to have boarded the semi low floor bus at Gandhipuram and insisted that they would pay only the ordinary fare.
It is learnt that the bus crew handed them over to the Vadavalli police.
Later, the students alleged that they were manhandled by a police officer.
Students alleged that they could not afford to pay 100 per cent increase in fare every day as ordinary buses were being replaced with semi low floor buses even during peak hours.
Even as the situation grew tense, the police rushed in reinforcements.
As the road blockade was on, devotees to Marudhamalai and residents living in the area were forced to walk for more than two km since road traffic stood completely suspended.
Revenue Divisional Officer, M. Balachandran and Coimbatore South Tahsildar, P. Subramanian held talks with the agitated students.
It was made clear to students that both ordinary as well as semi low floor buses would be operated and students could opt for a bus of their choice.
It was also promised to operate both buses during peak hours, giving an option to students.
With regard to the charge of a police officer manhandling a student, revenue authorities asked the students to give a complaint in writing so that the same could be investigated and action could be initiated against the official concerned.
Following this, the students withdrew their agitation.
K. Sivakumar, City Unit Secretary of the Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has pointed out that the Government was increasingly introducing semi low floor buses on city roads and indirectly imposing a bus fare increase on the people.
This was largely affecting the student community since these buses came in only as a replacement for the ordinary buses, denying a choice for the people.
He exhorted the Government to intervene and ensure that normal and existing fare structure alone was collected even in semi low floor buses.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has flayed the increase in fares introduced by the TNSTC in the name of semi low floor buses.
The fare structure in these buses was higher, ranging from Rs. 5 to Rs. 13.
‘Unfortunate’
“It is unfortunate that the new semi low floor buses have been inducted replacing almost all the ordinary services. This would hit the people hard especially when they have been suffering from rise in prices of all commodities,” it was pointed out.
There were several villages waiting for regular bus services or additional services. Instead of doing that, the authorities had removed ordinary services and introduced semi low floor buses on existing routes.
The CPI(M) wanted the Government to announce a roll back on fare increase immediately and operate these buses at the old rates.

The striking workers in the Nokia India plant near here will resume work Saturday morning, ending their four day strike that began Tuesday over the transfer of an employee.
The stalemate was broken after a long meeting of the Nokia India Employees Progressive Union (NIEPU), Nokia India’s management representatives and the Joint Labour Commissioner here.
“We have called off the strike. The management has assured us to take appropriate action on our demands on resumption of work (Saturday),” NIEPU’s joint general secretary P. Suresh told IANS.
In a statement issued here, Nokia India said: “The issue has been resolved through mutual dialogue and to the satisfaction of all parties involved. However, the suspension pending inquiry notice to some employees who are reported to have committed acts of serious misconduct still remains and will be concluded through disciplinary proceedings.”
However, Labour Progressive Front (LPF) general secretary M. Shanmugam told IANS that as per the understanding arrived after the meeting, the suspension orders for 23 workers will be revoked when they report to duty Saturday.
“Decision on the balance 40 workers under suspension will be taken on Jan 29 at the labour commissioner’s office,” he added.
The NIEPU is affiliated to LPF – the labour wing of the ruling DMK in the state.
The workers were on the backfoot as they struck work without giving the statutory notice for the strike.
The Nokia India plant can churn out around 500,000 mobile phones a day and has the highest productivity among all Nokia plants across the world.
Nearly 50 percent of the production are shipped out to Nokia’s global markets.
The company has around 3,700 permanent workers, around 2,000 trainees and 1,000 contract workers.
According to union officials, nearly 70 percent of the total workforce are women.

Nokia India workers, on strike after 55 employees were suspended earlier this week, refused to end their agitation Thursday despite being asked by the labour commissioner’s office to resume duty.

“The strike started Tuesday after the management suspended 35 employees. On Wednesday, another 20 employees were suspended,” an official of the Nokia India Employees Progressive Union told IANS.
Workers were expected to resume work Thursday following a conciliatory meeting at the labour commissioner’s office the previous day.
The labour commissioner had issued an advisory to the union to resume work and also directed the management to sort out the row by Jan 25.
Incidentally, M. Shanmugam, general secretary of the Labour Progressive Front (LPF) — of which the Nokia union is an affiliate — had earlier told IANS that the issue had been sorted out. “Production will resume immediately,” he had said.

LPF is the labour wing of the ruling DMK party.
According to the Nokia workers’ union, the immediate cause of the strike was the transfer of an employee from one job to another.
“The human resource manager was curt and threatened us with suspension orders when we met him in connection with the shift change,” said a union official.
Nokia India is defending the move to suspend the workers. “Every company has certain codes and values, the violation of which cannot be brooked,” a company spokesperson told IANS.

Govt was willing to assist the striking Tirupur dyeing units: CM

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the government was willing to assist the striking Tirupur dyeing units in setting up Common Effluent Treatement Plants (CETP) based on Supreme Court order.
He said it was matter of regret the that dyeing units of Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT) were continuing the stir even after the State Government offered to provide a subsidy of Rs 120 crore.
Answering a set of questions, the Chief Minister was reacting to the stand taken by the DAT to continue the more than a month-long strike till they received the subsidy amount.
He said after the affected farmers moved the High Court, protesting dyeing units letting polluted water into the Noyyal River, the court, directed the dyeing units to set up CETP by July 2007 and compensate the farmers.
However, the case was dragging on for nearly two and a half years after the dyeing units moved the Supereme Court against the High Court order, he said.
The Apex Court, while upholding the High Court order, directed the dyeing units to pay the fine imposed by the High Court to the farmers by January six and ensure zero waste discharge.
Mr Karunanidhi said the dyeing units, for the past six years, had been taking steps to set up treatment plants, through bank loans and spending their own money, but could not get any assistance from the previous AIADMK regime.
