Ruling DMK & AIADMK to groom their women cadres to fight elections.
Posted by ganesh in Communication, Culture, Departments, Health, Information, Other, Public, competition, government, modification, programme, tamilnadu on March 12th, 2010
Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK and main opposition AIADMK have sprung into action, now that the women’s reservation bill is just a step away from being passed. Both parties have decided to groom their women cadres to fight elections.

The ruling DMK is planning to hold camps across the state to empower its women cadres.
“We plan to train DMK party women in various aspects of governance. We want to groom our party women so that they are ready as and when the 33 percent reservation for women comes into effect,” M. Kanimozhi, party Rajya Sabha member and daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, told IANS.
Tamil Nadu has already reserved 33 percent of seats in local bodies for women and such camps will be useful for DMK cadres, she said, adding that a three-day camp was held in Nilgiri district in October for women party cadre from Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiri districts.
AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa said in a statement issued here Friday: “When the women’s reservation bill becomes law, we will need women of calibre to take up positions in the state legislature and parliament.

“The AIADMK will take the necessary steps towards grooming and developing women of substance for a positive political role in the future.”
The women’s reservation bill was passed in the upper house of parliament, Rajya Sabha, March 9. Now it awaits the nod of Lok Sabha. It will reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.
Jayalalitha said: “A committee is being constituted to work out the curriculum, training modules and modalities of the training programme for women who will, under this programme, be trained in elocution, basic law, basic financial management and the basics of administration and political science.”
The former chief minister said the AIADMK government under her leadership was instrumental in establishing all women police stations in Tamil Nadu.
“Even a Women’s Commando Unit and an All Women Police Battalion were set up by my government. I issued an order by which the mother’s name could also be used by a person as her or his initials,” Jayalalithaa said.
Citing her government’s decision to introduce a new terminology ‘kudimagal’ (feminine gender) as a synonym for ‘kudimagan’, the Tamil word for citizen, Jayalalithaa said the Women’s Self Help group movement was given an impetus during her rule.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi dream project, the new Secretariat – Assembly complex at Omandhurar Estate here, built at a cost of Rs 425 crore, will be inaugurated at a grand and a glittering ceremony in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will take part.

Besides the two leaders, Chief Ministers of other southern States Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have been invited, as also scores of Union Ministers and party leaders, including from the BJP and CPI(M).
The huge complex is a labour of love of DMK president Karunanidhi, who has been visiting the latest landmark of Chennai on almost on a daily basis to review its progress. Karunanidhi had first made the announcement for the project in 2007 during the golden jubilee celebrations of his political career.
Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi are scheduled to arrive here by a special flight for the programme and return the same day. Police have stepped up the security for the high-profile inaugural event that is expected to draw a huge crowd from all over the state.
The function would be presided over by Karunanidhi and State Governor Surjith Singh Barnala would also attend.Around 5,000 policemen are scheduled to guard the complex during its inauguration, where its first budget will be presented by Finance Minister K Anbazhagan on 19 March. Traffic diversions have also been put in place.
Flags of DMK and Congress are fluttering on city roads, especially of the latter, erecting banners and posters welcoming their party leaders, Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi.
Though all three southern Chief Ministers have been invited, official sources said Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, K Rosiah and B S Yedduryappa, respectively, are scheduled to participate.
Some banners erected near the airport hailed the new found friendship between Tamilnadu and Karnataka, locked in a dispute over Cavery river, following the two States’ statue diplomacy last year that led to betterment in relations.
The 58-year-old Tamilnadu Legislature concluded its last session on January 9, 2010 at the 17th century Fort St George. The first Legislature of the erstwhile Madras State after Independence was held in March 1952 at the Fort, located on the banks of the Bay of Bengal, which was regarded as the first ‘establishment’ of the British in India.
Sahai calls for tax exemption in food processing units in TN
Posted by ganesh in Agriculture, Departments, Health, Information, Other, government, modification, programme, tamilnadu on March 12th, 2010
Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister of Food Processing Industries has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to provide tax exemption to food processing units in the state. He said that the matter has already been discussed with M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu.

Further voicing concern over huge post-harvest food wastage worth Rs 50,000 crore in the country, the minister suggested various state governments to join hands with the Centre in its efforts for promoting the sector.
The value of wastage had come down now by Rs 8,000 crore after the food processing industries (FPI) achieved a 10 per cent growth against six per cent in 2004, but much more is needed to be done in the sector to completely avoid wastage.
Sahai, “Though India was the largest producer of milk and second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, a large quantity of the perishable commodities was wasted, (due to lack of cold storage facilities).”
Besides, he also inaugurated a building of the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT).

Animation and Gaming industry provided greater advantage to promote language, art and culture, Tamil Nadu Information Technology Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna said today.

Inaugurating Media Arts and Science College (MASC) at Neelankarai, near here, she said ”we can take our art, culture and language to all corners of the world, through animation of our mythological tales and life history of our distinguished personalities of the past.
Through animation the life history of personalities like revolutionary poets Bharathiyaar and Bharathidasan could be spread and indigenous games like Pallankuzhi and Snake and Ladder could be introduced.” She offered the first admission letter to a differently abled student residing in a destitute home in Chennai at the MASC, a first of its kind college dedicated for Media Education.
”Tamil Nadu is a thriving base for knowledge and economy.
Our State stands exemplary in all of its endeavors, be it growth of IT and manufacturing industries, IT policies, computer education, introducing Tamil keyboards or dedication of Tamil virtual university for the language lovers across the globe etc,” she said.
In the past four years around 48,000 crore has been invested in the State for industrial growth and aims at bringing holistic and equitable growth by removing rural-urban divide, she remarked. Mr Purushothaman, Regional Director, NASSCOM, said ”with respect to Animation and Gaming industry, India suffers talent crunch. The Animation and Gaming industry expected to grow to one billion US dollars and 830 million dollars by 2012 needs talented youngsters with adequate skill sets.

Along with development of skills, English proficiency would help our country to do cross border projects and also bring end-to-end development in the industry.
Ms Amy Hirsch, Vice Consul, United States Consulate General, who graced the occasion, said ”India is a great source of education, but it is learnt that only 10 per cent of the students who have secondary education have access to higher studies.” More importance to education and gaining of practical knowledge will accelerate the growth of India. The tie-up between India and US in education is expected to bring a marvelous change and various expansion and scholarship programmes are being planned,

Awareness Meeting on “Do not use Mobile Phones while Driving Vehicles”
Posted by ganesh in Communication, Departments, Health, Madurai, Mobiles, Public, Transport, accident, government, illegal, meeting, police, programme on March 11th, 2010
Do not mix driving and talking. This was the message conveyed at an awareness meeting on “do not use mobile phones while driving vehicles” conducted by the Regional Transport Authority officials for the motorists in the city on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, RTO (Madurai central) T.G. Thomas said that talking over mobile phones and riding/driving vehicles was more dangerous than drunken driving. Vehicular checks carried out by the authorities (on drivers who were spotted talking over phones) revealed that they (drivers’) were not concentrating on the driving. He underlined the need for self-discipline among the drivers and suggested to stop their vehicles and talk on the phones, if it was very urgent.
Motor Vehicles Inspector Amirtheswaran narrated the mental agony underwent by a family which had lost one of their member’s in a road accident. Investigations revealed that the victim who was talking over the mobile phone was hit by a lorry near the busy Netaji Road intersection.
Inspector of Police (Traffic) A. Balakrishnan appealed to the drivers’ present at the meeting to take a pledge that they would not talk over the mobile phones while driving their vehicles from today onwards. “Everyday, I booked at least 4-5 motorists on charges of speaking over mobile phones under Section 184 of Motor Vehicles Act and imposed a fine of Rs 1,100,” he warned.

Motor Vehicles Inspector J.K. Baskaran said that at least 50 per cent of the road accidents reported was due to careless driving. It had also come to light that the drivers’ talked over their phones.
Rajinikanth from Aravind Eye Hospital said that research by experts suggested less talking over mobile phones as it would affect the ears. Mobile phones produced electro magnetic waves and long conversations over the phone may affect hearing. Persons may use ear phones as an alternative. Wherever there was weak signal, do not use the phones, he advised.
Suresh Kannan proposed vote of thanks. Maxi drivers, auto rickshaw drivers among others attended.

Dravidar Kazhagam Demanding Action against self-styled fake ‘godmen,’

Members of the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK), founded by rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy, today organised a protest demonstration, demanding action against self-styled fake ‘godmen,’ who take gullible people for a ride.

Led by DK President K Veeramani, the agitators urged the Centre and state governments to initiate criminal action against such ‘godmen,’ who cheat the public in the name of spirituality.
Mr Veeramani said the government, besides initiating criminal action, should also confiscate their properties.
The Income Tax Department should also raid the ‘godmens’ ashrams and other premises, trace their sources of income and bring them under the tax net.

Senior leader Suba Veerapandian, addressing the agitators, said ”godmen” who were supposed to be leading a simple life, giving up all comforts, were, instead, enjoying a luxurious life.
The DK activists organised the agitation in the wake of the electronic media’s exposURE of the sleazy acts, allegedly involving self-styled ‘godman’ Swami Nityananda with a popular Tamil actress, a few days back.
Perambur flyover is almost over and opened for end of this month
Posted by ganesh in Chennai, Departments, Information, Other, PWD, Transport, government, programme on March 11th, 2010
Work on the Perambur flyover is almost over and is expected to be opened for traffic by the end of this month.

The flyover is likely to be opened after the Pennagaram elections, which is scheduled for March 27, Mayor M. Subramanian told The Hindu. The painting work, laying of bituminous tar and installation of lights, including two high-mast lamps, have been completed on the three arms of the 1120-m-long flyover. On the railway portion the concrete work has been completed, he added.
“The flyover had been a challenge for the Corporation but with the able guidance of Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, the civic body’s Bridges Department and contractor were able to complete it,” he added.
The work order for the bridge was issued on May 7, 2008 and the period of construction was supposed to be 20 months. The work is expected to be completed this weekend.
Open foundation with very large footings has been used to ensure stability of the flyover. There are 76 lamp-posts on the flyover, which has been constructed at a total cost of Rs.51 crore. Shifting of water lines alone costs the Chennai Corporation Rs.3.50 crore and Rs.7.50 crore went towards land acquisition.
Officials said that two new roads are being formed — a loop road from the Jamalia side to Ayanavaram — which is 350-m-long and 12 m wide. On the north side, Tank Bund Road and Perambur High Road are being connected with a 120-m-long and 15-m-wide road. Footpaths have been provided on all roads around the flyover.
On the traffic arrangements, a senior official of the civic body said that once the flyover was inaugurated, a clover leaf pattern would be put in place for traffic movement. “After studying the traffic we have also created extra road space. Signages would be placed for the benefits of the motorists,” he said.
The bridge has three segments — the arm towards Jamalia has a single lane; the Ayanavaram side has three lanes (two lanes go up and one lane comes down); and on the Perambur side there are four lanes (two each for traffic moving on either sides).
