Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Monday called for an integrated approach in the education system by combining science with humanities to help young men and women understand society better.

Addressing the 5th convocation of SRM University in Kattankulathur near here, she said there was a need for incorporating aspects of humanities into the curricula of science specialisations.

There was also a need to humanise science disciplines in order to inculcate in the minds of students, a perspective about the individual, society, the nation and the world. “Every educated youngster should have a perspective about how our polity works and what our Constitution seeks to achieve for the nation,” she said.

She added that as educated youth, students had a great obligation to strive for social change in their own ways and guard against social evils such as gender discrimination, the dowry system, domestic violence and female foeticide.

Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Radhakrishnan, who received an honorary degree of Doctor in Science, said India was instrumental in discovering water particles on the moon through Chandrayaan. Whatever India had achieved in the area of space science was the efforts of its work in the past five decades.

Among the six countries to have capabilities for satellites and launch vehicles, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the entire world looked up to India now. He also said a nano satellite designed at the SRM would be sent along with ISRO’s PSLV in 2010.

A total of 4,519 students from 86 disciplines received undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma certificates and doctorates.

Prashantha Battacharya, B.Tech Computer Science, received the Corporation Bank’s Gold Medal for the best outgoing student. T.R. Pachamuthu, SRM University Chancellor, presided. P. Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor presented the annual report. P. Ravi and T.P. Ganesan, Pro Chancellors, were also present.

Temple blocking way to Dalit colony demolished

A 100 sq.ft. temple on Jeeva Street at Singanallur here was demolished on Monday to enable full use of the street by a colony of Dalit families. The demolition, under police protection, opened up vehicle movement to the colony.

On January 30, authorities had demolished a wall that blocked access to the arterial Kamaraj Road for 58 Dalit families of Thanthai Periyar Colony. It was allegedly built across Jeeva Street to separate the colony of Dalits from a residential area of caste Hindus. The Dalits alleged that it was built 19 years ago to ensure that they did not pass through the colony of caste Hindus.

Though the wall was demolished, the temple was left alone in the face of a protest by Hindu outfits.

The authorities wanted to relocate it only on the basis of consensus. It had held talks last week on shifting the temple that was located in the colony of the caste Hindus.

Supervised by senior officials, a special demolition squad of the civic body removed the structure after the idol of Lord Vinayaka was relocated and consecrated on a platform near an Amman temple. There was no resistance.

JUSTICE RENDERED

“First, the wall that stood as a symbol of discrimination for many years was demolished. Now, the temple also has been removed. Justice has been rendered to us,” said V. Rajan, a resident of the Dalit colony.

“The younger generation in the colony was determined to do away with the discrimination that our elders had to put up with,” the 37-year-old Mr. Rajan said. “More than the mere physical block created by the wall, the discrimination it symbolised hurt us.”

State convenor of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front P. Sampath appreciated the State government’s speedy action to remove the wall and the temple.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan welcomed the shifting of the idol. He had written to Chief Minister M. Karunandhi on Sunday seeking the removal of the temple. “But, this is only one of the many instances of discrimination against Dalits across the State. The government should constitute a committee to study various forms of untouchability and take appropriate action.”

District convenor of the Front, U.K. Sivagnanam, alleged that the temple was being used as a cattle shed. It was made into a temple only to block the road. “It was removed on Monday only because there was no proper response from the other side [the caste Hindus] to the proposal for re-location.”

On the lack of resistance to the demolition of the temple, he said: “Not all of them [the caste-Hindus] were in favour of blocking the way to the Dalit colony. Only a few were against removing the wall and the temple.” Mr. Rajan said: “Earlier, rushing sick people to hospitals was a difficult task because the only route available to Kamaraj Road was a very narrow street. The removal of the wall and the temple on Jeeva Street is certainly a solution.”

Triple murder case in Ashok Nagar to transfer the CB CID

The Madras High Court on Monday said it was of the view that if the Chennai Police is not able to solve a triple murder case in Ashok Nagar within four weeks, the Commissioner of Police will request the State Government to transfer the case to the CB CID.
Madras High Court
The crime relates to the murder of Saravanan, his wife Kasturi and a female domestic worker , Anbarasi, in November 2008.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Gokhale and Justice K.K. Sasidharan passed the order while disposing of a petition by S.D.S. Rajadhevan, a city advocate. The petition had been filed in public interest to bring to light the number of murders that had occurred in Ashok Nagar here.

The petitioner, a retired Superintendent of Police, CB CID, said as a resident of Ashok Nagar he was rudely shocked and affected seeing the sorry state-of-affairs of the police, particularly in the investigation of murder cases which remained unresolved.

Despite the infrastructure and manpower, the police were unable to put in their best to protect the public and bring the culprits to book immediately. There was little or no coordination, supervision or detection of property cases and grave crimes.

His main prayer was a direction to the authorities to transfer all the murder cases of Chennai Police for further investigation by CB CID or CBI so as to ensure proper investigation and to restore public confidence.

The Government Pleader had earlier filed a report pointing out how security arrangements in the locality (Ashok Nagar) had been enhanced.

It was also stated that though there were 19 murders in the area since 2008, 18 had been promptly detected. It was only one case of triple murder which remained unsolved.
murder case
The Commissioner of Police in his affidavit submitted that 10 special teams had been formed to look into the case and it was hoped that investigation would move towards its logical conclusion and that the accused would be arrested.

On the prayer to transfer the case to CB CID, it was stated in the counter that if there was any difficulty in solving the case, the Commissioner would not hesitate to request the government to hand over the case to CB CID.

The Bench said, however, no time limit had been specified for completing this exercise. It was quite natural it would be difficult to specify any time limit in this regard. At the same time, there was justification in the petitioner’s anxiety for early action. The triple murder case had remained unresolved for more than a year now.

The court said the petitioner may assist the authorities in the matter of investigation of the case.
